Notice of Suspensions Brings Media Attention
State Arts Council Director Rebecca Lawrence’s report on suspensions of some services and programs, as a result of state budget cuts, drew notice from media outlets. New Hampshire Public Radio did a brief interview that aired yesterday, and New Hampshire Business Review posted a story.
Arts Education Conference: Early Bird Registration Deadline is August 14
The Early Bird registration deadline is August 14 for “Maps & Journeys: Perspectives on the Future of Arts Education in New Hampshire,” the State Arts Council’s fall 2009 Arts Education partnership conference. The event will be held October 30 to- November 1 at the AMC Highland Center/Crawford Notch in the White Mountains. Conference keynotes and guest artists will include James and Maureen Tusty, co-directors and producers of The Singing Revolution, a documentary film on Estonia’s independence movement; Julie Lyonn Lieberman, master violinist, vocalist and educator; and Bob Morrison of Quadrant Education Research. Morrison will present findings from the N.H. Arts Education Data Project, the first comprehensive survey of arts education in the state. A variety of workshops in all arts disciplines will be offered. The three-day conference provides educators, artists, and school leaders with networks, tools, models, and information to design quality arts education programs for all students. Sunday is Medal Day at the MacDowell Colony
Acclaimed visual artist Kiki Smith will receive the 50th Edward MacDowell Medal Sunday, August 9, in ceremonies at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, N.H. The medal is given annually to an American artist for outstanding contribution to the arts. Past recipients have included Edward Hopper, Joan Didion, Merce Cunningham and Leonart Bernstein. The presentation, which is free and open to the public, begins at 12:15 p.m. Bring a picnic lunch for enjoying post-ceremony, and then, from 2 to 5 p.m., visit the studios of artists in residence. New this year will be a collaborative sculptural program, “Make Art,” which will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, call the colony at 603-924-3886.
